Singaporeans take a lot of things for granted. Or maybe it was just me. Whenever I wanted to throw something out, like an old lamp, keyboard, I would just chuck them into the bin. Or if it was a piece of furniture, I'd move it to the container that's conveniently just outside my Pasir Ris home. Then, overnight those stuff will magically disappear to a place I never thought about.
Things are not as easy here. Even every day rubbish needs to be put into neat containers that are housed in locked sheds. You need a key to throw your rubbish. There are no workers to collect your rubbish from your apartment or building for you. Here, a few buildings share a shed and the workers clear the rubbish from the sheds.
Last December, when we were clearing his apartment of his old, unused stuff, he said that the stuff are not to be thrown into those sheds. We'd have to go to a rubbish dump to throw them there.
Today, we were at that place. It is a big place with blue containers marked out for different types of trash. You cannot even just dump your trash any where you wish. You have to sort them out and throw them into the correct containers. Electrical appliances have to be sorted and thrown into bins in a separate building. It was quite bothersome. But everybody here does it and took care to sort their rubbish properly.
There are still plenty of stuff in the apartment we have to throw out. Looks like we'd have to make another trip there.
